Major Political and Military Shake up Hints at Failed Coup Attempt Against Xi Jinping

Synopsis: In late August, Xi Jinping appeared to have purged two officials widely considered to have bright futures in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)—Politburo member Sun Zhengcai and Chief of Joint Staff Fang Fenghui. Xi later summoned senior officials for an emergency meeting, presided over an unusual military parade, and replaced two-thirds of the department heads in the Central Military Commission, the top military body.

The abrupt and drastic nature of Xi’s political and military moves and the seeming lack of internal opposition to those moves suggests that a serious event must have occurred inside the CCP.
